BB to initiate its own refinance fund to the tune of Tk 2.0b for jute sector

Bangladeshi business people in the jute sector including exporters and jute mills will now get bank loans with a lower rate of interest under the new Bangladesh Bank (BB) scheme. The central bank is going to initiate its own refinance fund to the tune of Tk 2.0 billion for the jute sector after have refused by the government to provide a payment guarantee against the scheme.

A complete proposal will be presented before the board of directors of the Bangladesh Bank (BB) seeking approval of the scheme with the revolving fund having the tenure of five years.

With the central government imposing anti-dumping duty last week on the import of purified teraphthalic acid (PTA), a raw material for the production of polyester chips which in turn are used to manufacture polyester filament yarn, polyester staple fibre and polyester film. The levy of anti-dumping duty will lead to increase in the prices of polyester yarn and subsequent rise in the prices of synthetic fabrics like saris and dress material. The prices of synthetic fabrics are set to increase by nearly 15 percent.

Indian cotton exports likely to see a downward trend in 2014-15 over firm domestic supplies

India, the world's second-biggest cotton grower having already exported 8.8 million bales of natural fibre and is expected to ship 10 million bales in the current 2013-14 marketing year will see a downward trend in its cotton exports in the 2014-15 marketing year starting August as exportable supplies will be curbed by domestic demand and lower production.

According to the latest report on cotton by US Department of Agriculture (USDA) India’s cotton exports are likely to plunge by 23 percent to 7.7 million bales in the marketing year 2014-15. One bale comprises of 170 kg of cotton.

The southern textile mills after having done well for the last 10 month of the year in cotton yarn exports is facing a slow down in February-March due to drop in demand. However, the demand has not fallen sharply and expected to revive in April or after the elections.

According to Industry sources, on an average 120 million kg of cotton yarn was exported a month from the country for 10 months from April last year which is now reduced. China who had increased purchase in December and January has slowed down in February.

Pakistan cotton crop season has turned out to be a good year as it registered an increase of around 4.97 lakh bales during the crop season 2013-14 March ending as compared to the corresponding period last year. The country has received more than 13.38 million cotton bales during the crop season.

Till April 1, 2014 during fortnight, the country produced around 120,100 bales while during same period last year, the country produced more than 120,300 bales.
