Pakistan registers 15pc growth in textile exports despite power issues

Textile exports in Pakistan have registered a growth of 14.54 percent in terms of value during February 2014, stated S M Tanveer Chairman APTMA Punjab. The growth was majorly led by impressive performance by knitwear, bed-wear, towels and ready-made garments in quantitative terms during the month.

Yarn spinners in Punjab region are headed for another crisis which can force them to stop production or to close down factories to avoid losses. A mix of domestic and regional factors has been forcing many spinners to stop buying cotton and production until the market stabilises. This has led to unsold stock to pile up at ginners.

Regional issues that have made domestic yarn spinning unviable include slowing demand from Chinese demand for Pakistani yarn and a five per cent rebate allowed by India on its yarn exports since January.

As the labour strike enters the fifth day, output of unfinished fabrics in India’s biggest man-made fabric industry in Surat has been adversely impacted. The strike by over 10,000 powerloom workers in Bhestan industrial estate for wage hike has curtailed daily production of around 70 lakh metre of fabrics in over 1,000 powerloom units.

Cotton production in Mozambique is set to rise this year, it may total 110,000 tons of cotton in 2013/14, which involves over 123,000 families in the north and centre of the country, at the time the number of producers is also likely to drop by 15 percent, due to cotton currently being sold at uncompetitive prices as compared to other cash crops such a tobacco or sunflowers, according to the National cotton institute.

Because of the reduction in producers, cotton production areas are projected to drop by 3.5 percent. In 2010 this crop occupied an area of 165,248 hectares.
