Farmers in US, India and China to cut cotton acreage as prices slump

According to reports, cotton farmers in US will probably cut down acreage to the lowest since 2009 after prices slumped in January to a five-year low.

Plantings is predicted to drop to 9.73 million acres in the season beginning 1 August, from 11.04 million a year earlier, as farmers will switch to other crops including peanuts. The National Cotton Council is set to release its planting-intentions survey on 7 February.

Technology experts at Japanese textile giant Toray last year had developed a 100 percent bio-based polyester yarn from waste molasses has gone ahead to make another new development nylon bio-polymer also derived from waste molasses, a by-product of the sugar industry which is normally disposed. The new development will be officially launched at this week’s ISPO exhibition in Munich.

The conference aims to raise awareness about organic textiles and provide guidance and technical information about the GOTS standard.

JCT to repay convertible bond holder from sale of its non-core assets

JCT Ltd, one of India's leading textile makers, plans to sell some of its noncore assets to repay holders of its foreign currency convertible bonds. The company’s non-core assets include 70 acres of land at Ganganagar in Rajasthan and two plots in Delhi. The combined market value of these land would be about Rs 80-90 crore.

The move comes after the Punjab and Haryana High Court last week dismissed a petition seeking winding up of JCT, filed by hedge fund QET that holds a majority of the Rs 115 crore of bonds outstanding.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandra Babu Naidu attending a handloom workers convention yesterday announced that loans of all the handloom units in the state would be waived, this came in on the lines of waiver for farm loans.

He also announced that the state government would purchase the unsold stocks of handloom workers and handloom co-operative societies.

International Textile Group is a diversified U.S. fabric maker based in Greensboro, North Carolina with more than 30 years of operation in Richmond County will be making improvements in its textile plant at Cordova facility. This was announced at the Richmond County Board of Commissioners meeting Monday evening.

The company will be expanding and upgrading the manufacturing capabilities of the plant, as well as implementing a new operating schedule which is expected to bring in 10 new additional jobs within the next two years. This will involve an investment to the tune of $2 million.
