Heads of EAC to set up mechanism to revive textile industries in East Africa

Heads of the East African Community member states on agreeing to set up a mechanism that will promote growth and protection of textile and tanner industries in East Africa. The council of ministers is currently working out modalities to enhance implementation of the agreement by Heads of State to revive textile and tanner industries.

At the Convention held between Christian Adovelande, president of the West African Development Bank (BOAD) and the General Director of the National Office of farm incomes and leaders of local banks engaged in operation. It was decided that BOAD will deploy finance of 115 billion FCFA for the cotton campaign of 2014-15 in Benin.

The funding will be allocated to cover the needs related to the 2014-2015 cotton campaign, including the purchase of cotton from producers, ginning and the storage, disposal and marketing of cotton fiber and derivatives.

This planned action is driven by the continuing consolidation of paper industry customers in Europe, and the continuous need to match the Company’s paper machine clothing manufacturing capacity in Europe with the demands of customers.

Local cotton market in Pakistan witnessed surge in trade turnover by 20 percent to 15,200 bales (of 155 kilogram) as spinners and many of the textile mill owners rushed to develop inventories to keep continue their production during the commodity’s off-season (March-June) on fears of short supply of quality lint, said a dealer on Friday.

Those, who have yet not built inventories with prime quality cotton, are acquiring it ahead of the off-season, said a broker at Karachi Cotton Exchange, adding the size of unsold cotton stock stood around 1.1 million bales in the current season.

Shalag US Inc. — the North American division of Israel-based textile company Shalag Industries Ltd., a global supplier of nonwoven fabrics for hygiene and wipes applications will be expanding its production facility in Granville County, North Carolina. The expansion will create 40 new jobs over the next three years.

The expansion of the facility in Oxford with an investment of $16 million would add a third thermo-bonding production line. The company currently has 74 employees in its Oxford plant.

China has assured to end a costly stockpiling program that has artificially exaggerated cotton prices. The Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC) reluctant to accept the current weak market price, has urged the government to buy part of its crop and store it in state reserves, said two trade sources with knowledge of the issue.

XPCC, also known as the army corps, or 'bingtuan', has become a sort of state within a state and gained a dominant role in industries such as cotton, where it employs about 200,000 mainly Han Chinese on some of Xinjiang's best land.
