Southern India Mills’ Association (SIMA) Cotton Development and Research Association (CDRA) involved in cotton-seed production and distribution has developed the battery-powered, portable, handheld kapas plucking machine in association with Coimbatore-based Point Industries. The machine is provided with cotton collection bag.

The cotton kappa plucker machine by launched by Chairman of Confederation of Indian Textile Industry Prem Malik in Coimbatore on Friday.

A textile design expert Professor Wendy Weiss from Nebraska, USA is helping traditional Patola or Ikat weavers of Somasar village in Surendranagar to design motifs for textile through a design software that translates designs into traditional patterns.

Ikat is a traditional form of yarn preparation for weaving by dying it, weaving, preparing warp or weft threads and binding. Patola textile has a big market outside the state and also abroad.

The Karnataka state government has steps to develop the textile sector is contemplating the launch of “Vastra bhagya” to hand out handloom sarees for women and dhotis for men belonging to BPL families on the occasion of two or three major festivals in the next fiscal, according to minister for textiles Babu Rao Chinchansur.

The minister said that there were 1.25 lakh working power looms, 75,000 working hand loom and around 10,000 manual looms at 1,000 co-operative societies. These units could produce sufficient quantity of hand loom sarees and dhotis for one crore plus BPL families.

The 3rd China-South Asia Expo, in conjunction with the 23rd China Kunming Import and Export Fair will be held in Kunming from June 12 to 16. American clothing and accessories chain Gap in partnership with Indian textile giant Arvind is finally set to open its first store in India on Saturday. Gap has been late to enter India compared to other international high street brands such as, Marks & Spencer and Zara, has kept its prices low.

The Bangladesh ministry of textiles and jute (MoTJ) has urged the ministry of finance (MoF) to provide equal facilities for jute goods like other agro products as the country earns a significant amount of foreign exchange by exporting jute and jute goods every year and with a view to keeping employment of the sector unaffected.

Currently, around 40 million people are involved directly and indirectly in the jute industry. So, it is necessary to provide equal treatment to the jute products like the other agro products to keep the existing employment of the sector intact.
