Ethiopia encourages Indian garment exporters

Melat and Rahel, both 24 years of age, completed their studies last year in the east African country of Ethiopia and landed their first job in an Indian textile company. They are among the 700-odd young men and women employed at KPR Export Plc. at Makelle, Ethiopia. They were trained at KPR’s Coimbatore manufacturing plant.

Australia has a fashion problem. More than 500,000 tonnes of clothing waste is sent to landfill each year. But a new way of recycling could redirect some of our unwanted textiles from polluting the environment, by repurposing cotton waste into anything from new clothes to prosthetic knees.

Developed by our team at Deakin University, where we work on designing materials and processes for a circular economy, this solution for recycling textiles involves dissolving cotton and regenerating it into brand-new cellulose – a complex, strong carbohydrate with many industrial uses.

Egyptian cotton exports hike

Egyptian cotton exports reached 579,300 metric Kantar during the second quarter (Q2) of the agricultural season 2018/19 that starts from December 2018 and ends in February 2019, up from 379,700 metric Kantar during the same period of the previous season, an increase of 52.6%, according to Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

The CAPMAS explained in its 2019 quarterly bulletin of cotton that this increase is due to an increase in cotton production.

ITF urges retailers to source garments locally

Ukraine plans to attract up to US$ 300 million of investments in the development of the domestic technical textiles and nonwovens industry in the next several years, according to the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers.

This is seen as a response to the recent plans of the Russian government to make heavy investments in the development of technical textiles, mainly to be supplied for the ever-growing needs of the Russian defence sector.

In a significant advancement for the textile printing sector, speciality chemical supplier CHT Group has produced print pastes and pigments that have been certified to the Cradle to Cradle (C2C) Gold Standard by consulting institute EPEA GmbH.

The breakthrough is a result of CHT having joined forces with multi-channel retailer Lidl to develop ‘innovative recyclable textile print products’ as part of a circular economy pilot project.

US-China trade war to create opportunity for textile sector

The USA has hiked additional tariff to 25% on US$ 200 billion imports from China, which is an opportunity for the Indian textiles industry, said CITI chairman Sanjay K Jain.

He stated that due to the ongoing trade war between the United States of America (USA) and China, the USA has hiked additional tariff to 25% on US$ 200 billion imports from China, applicable from 10th May 2019.

He further stated that the additional tariff hike covers Textile Chapters: 50-60.
