Rs 1,555 crore budget outlay to benefit garment exports

Union Minister Smriti Irani thanked for the Rs 6,226.50 crore provision in the Budget for textiles. She further added that the Rs 1,555-crore outlay in the Budget for remission of state levies will “greatly benefit" exports in the garments and made-ups segment of textiles.

Irani said that for the first time, the Budget has provided Rs 200 crore under PM Paridhan Rojgar Yojna to boost employment in the garment segment.

The decrease of 2.5 percent in Customs duty on nylon mono filament yarn will have a positive impact on the fishing net export market.

The first ever Apparel and Garment Making Centre was inaugurated in Meghalaya by the Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani. The centre covering an area of 45,000 sq feet was set up under North East Region Textiles Promotion Scheme (NERTPS) at an approximate cost of Rs 14.26 crore and was completed within a record time since its construction began in 2015.

The app ‘W Dhaga’ will benefit handloom weavers to transact business anytime, anywhere and they can send their indents and payments online through this app. The weavers can also access the status of the shipment of the despatched material, thereby, enhancing transparency.

The government is working on a policy to limit the flow of cheap cloth in India for which it is contemplating imposing a “dumping duty” on cloth that comes from China. A policy regarding the issue would soon be made in the Parliament, said Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani on Saturday.

The minister also visited several powerlooms in Bhiwandi in Maharashtra and interacted with the workers ensuring them about reviving the sector.

Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani sanctioned a Composite Textile Park for Arunachal Pradesh. The Park would have facilities for skill development, design and product upgradation and facilities for export of finished handicrafts, the Minister said during a meeting with Chief Minister Pema Khandu at New Delhi.

Ms Irani assured of deputing a group of experts to handhold the State government in preparation of the DPR and running the centre there after, an official release said.

Textile industry delegates have urged the Textile Ministry to come out with cotton fibre security policy to curtail the volatility in the price of the white fibre in the coming season. Members alleged that the stagnated growth in the cotton textile industry and exports is caused due to volatility in cotton prices.

The 19-member delegation which is led by SIMA and BJP State General Secretary met Mrs. Smriti Irani and submitted a joint memorandum.
