Duty drawback rates raised to support exporters

The government has raised duty refund rates on a host of items which includes garments to give a supporting hand to exporters. These revised rates are based on average incidence of Customs and Central Excise Duties and Service Tax related with the manufacture of export goods and involve substantial total drawback for exporters.

The Ministry of Finance in a press release on Monday said that the Central Government has notified the Schedule of revised All Industry Rates of Duty Drawback effective from 23rd November, 2015 as the exports drop for the eleventh month in a row in October.

Textile buying agents 80pc generates of export business urge relief from service tax

The Association of Buying Agents for Textiles has submitted a memorandum to the Union Finance Ministry seeking relief from service tax levied on them in the recent Budget. The textile buying agents so far were exempted from service tax, as it amounted to export of services and were earning foreign currency for the country, said M Anand, General Secretary of the association.

There are over 700 such agents across the country who play a vital role in garment exports as close to 80 per cent of the export business is generated through them.

Cotton ginned and baled applicable for service tax

Cotton will be soon applicable for 12.36% service tax on transport and storage, resulting in price rise. Prices of cotton that's ginned and baled likely to rise as their transport and storage have been deemed ineligible for exemption from service tax by the finance ministry, P Chidambaram.

Consumer affairs ministry officials said that they are yet to review the clarification. They are concerned for cotton as it will have a larger impact and they are still working on it with the finance ministry, one of them said.
