Textiles produced with toxic chemical ban from entering the EU market

European countries voted unanimously to extend the existing ban on nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPE) to imports because it poses “unacceptable risk” to aquatic wildlife. The use of NPE in the textile industry is made for cleaning, dyeing and rinsing agent in the processing of fabrics.

The use of NPE in the textile industry has been restricted in the EU for 10 years, but the new measures will also ban the import of goods containing the chemical.

Bulgarian export of clothing and textile marked growth in 2013 with exports reaching 1.8 billion euros - the highest level of Bulgarian exports since 2007. A 7 percent growth in export has been marked in comparison to 2012. Out of those 1.8 billion, export of textiles totaled € 328 million or about 18% of the total exports of the country. In 2014 it is expected that the branch will grow further.

These results bring Bulgaria's textile industry closer again to the strongest periods and the highest levels of export before the global economic crisis.

Pakistan witnessed export growth of $333.18 million (15.76 percent) to 28-member European countries- European Union (EU) under the autonomous trade preferences on 75 products in the first four months from January to April 2014. The sector wise break up of exports revealed textile remained the major beneficiary of the GSP plus arrangement.
