Egyptian government appoints an official steering committee to safeguard the future of the Egyptian Cotton brand

Recent moves to improve confidence in the Egyptian Cotton logo include the introduction of a partnership with Bureau Veritas and a new rigorous accreditation process, which uses DNA testing to distinguish between genuine Egyptian Cotton and regular cotton. Exports of Egyptian Cotton grew by 181.6% from December to February this year, and in August an investment of US$ 1.3 billion for modernising Egypt’s textiles sector was announced.

When asked which brand they would pay a premium for, 61% said Egyptian Cotton, which respondents also named as their preferred option for towels and bedding at the survey, commissioned by the Cotton Egypt Association, which was conducted by the independent custom research arm of Progressive Business Media, HTT’s parent company. When consumers were asked to arrange a list of cotton brands in order of perceived quality 89% placed Egyptian Cotton as one of their top two choices.

The Turkish cotton to see lower returns compared to other crops such as corn in cotton growing regions seen, the fall in production was the result of lower planting, at 370,000 hectares, down from 430,000 hectares in the previous season according to the Ankara bureau.

The government recently announced that the production bonus paid to farmers was to be raised to 0.65 lira per kilogramme of seed cotton, up from last season's bonus of 0.55 lira. Seed cotton is the unprocessed crop from which cotton fibre is ginned.
