NE textile sector gets Rs.1,038 cr funds under NERTPS scheme from Centre

The Union government has undertaken a Rs..1,038 crore ($156 million) under the North-East Region Textile Promotion scheme (NERTPS) to boost textile exports, increase jobs and curb the migration of workers in Northeast. The project is also aimed at developing and modernizing the textile sector by providing region-specific flexibility in execution.

With the textile ministry providing Rs.18 crore for setting up of a ready-made garment manufacturing unit or ‘Apparel and Garment Making Centre’ (AGMC) in each of the eight northeastern states. The North east's second readymade apparel manufacturing unit was inaugurated at western Tripura’s Bodhjungnagar industrial estate on Friday.

The textiles ministry recently announced a Rs.427-crore scheme to promote geo-technical textiles in northeast India which would be helpful in stabilizing roads, addressing the problem of landslides and preserving water bodies. Geo-technical textiles provide the functional advantages of higher endurance and durability in roads, embankments and infrastructure projects.

Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar, while appreciating the geo-technical textiles scheme, said his government is keen to implement the scheme in the state.
