Tajik cotton farmers focusing on increasing its cotton yields for which they are trying out more productive foreign seeds, even as it reduces the acreage devoted to the water-intensive crop.

In the interest of crop diversity and due to ecological concerns, the country's farmers have reduced the farmland planted under cotton by more than 26,000ha to 177,624ha between 2011 and 2014. Over the same period, nationwide cotton production dropped from 415,000 tonnes to 372,000 tonnes per year.

Kenyan Cabinet Secretary for Industrialisation and Enterprise Development Adan Mohammed and Jiangsu Lianfa Textile Company president Xiangjun Kong signed the deal on Thursday. According to Mohammed, the textile factory to be build by Jiangsu Lianfa Textile Company Limited, Chinese firm which will be one of the largest in the continent and likely to create more than 30,000 jobs.

A textile factory is being planned in the city of Chimoio, capital of Manica province, Mozambique which will create jobs for nearly 300 people.

The textile plant will have the capacity to produce 8,000 woollen blankets per month apart from this it will also manufacture shirts, trousers and other clothing items.

The factory will be operational by the middle of next year. To start with it plans to import raw material.

The company launched the first phase with an investment of over 1.2 billion birr and started production of carpet, towel, polyester and fiber-line home furniture (spring mattress and sofa). The company has undertaken expansion work in three phases and it is expecting to finalize second and third phases soon.
