Yarn prices at an all time low in India but weavers show no interest

Leading spinners including Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), Indorama as well as the local spinning units in and around the Surat, the country’s biggest man-made fabric hub have reduced yarn prices by almost Rs 15 per kg in different categories in the last one and a half month to encourage sale of yarn in the textile industry, but there are no takers.

The powerloom weavers in Surat have stopped purchasing yarn, the basic raw material required in the production of polyester fabrics, due to overproduction and the upcoming festival season.

In response to its draft action plan for apparels sector brought out by the Union Ministry suggestions the CII (Tirupur district council), and Sripuram Trust (a body of textile sector representatives) has put up proposal for creation of a ‘Textile Bank,’ a separate policy for manmade fibres and polyester, a processing zone for dyeing sector, and direct marketing facilities for power loom weavers.

Telangana Government’s plans to develop textile industry in Sircilla on the lines of Tirupur in Tamil Nadu, referred to as the knitwear capital of India, has resuscitate among the power loom weavers.
 
The town and its surrounding areas were rocked by a spate of suicides by the weavers due to crisis in the industry, unemployment and invasion of jet looms for over a decade. Replicating the Tirupur model for the textile town in Telangana can work wonders, only if there is an attitudinal change among the power loom weavers.
