Govt likely to reintroduce Tufs soon

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the last Cabinet meeting evinced keen interest and talked about technology upgradation funds scheme (Tufs). Tufs was launched in early 1990s to boost investment into the textiles sector. Under the scheme, five percent of the total investment for technology upgradation is compensated by the government.

The Tufs scheme was touted to be a great success, attracting massive investment and helping revive the textiles sector was discontinued two years ago due to lack of initiatives of the previous government.

Minister of State for Textiles (I.C) Shri Santosh Kumar Gangwar, today inaugurated the 55th India International Garment Fair, 2015, India's largest garment show in South Asia, covering apparel and fashion accessories which has attracted 305 buyers from across the globe, of which 202 are from traditional markets and 103 are from non-traditional markets. 2,921 buyers have already registered for the fair. The 55th IIGF is a three day fair which is being held from 13th to 15th July 2015, at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.

Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Textiles, Santosh Gangwar, at the annual conference of State textiles ministers held yesterday announced that the Textile Ministry plans to launch a venture capital fund with an initial corpus of Rs.35 crore in association with the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) to support start-up entrepreneurs in the sector.

The Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Textiles Santosh Kumar Gangwar approved setting up of 13 textile parks for which investment proposals of miniumum Rs100 crore will be considered, this move is expected to generate jobs for at least 2,500 to 3,000 people.

Subsidy amount of 40 crore each will be provided by the Ministry, said Gangwar. After agriculture, it is the textile industry which generates maximum employment

Gangwar has called for a meeting of the state Textile Ministers on 24 September, to seek their inputs on the new Textile policy and other related matters.
