The Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Attorney Association seeks Geographical Indication tag for Khadi as it stands as a fabric of the freedom struggle and a political weapon in Mahatma Gandhi's Swadeshi movement. Khadi is likely to get statutory protection as a GI-tagged product unique to the Indian subcontinent.
 
Khadi is not mere a piece of cloth but has now become a way of life. At one time, the spinning wheel was the symbol of India's poverty and backwardness. Mahatma Gandhi turned it into a symbol of self-reliance and non-violence.
 

Centre Taking Steps To Develop Khadi, Handloom Sectors

The Centre is taking steps to develop the sick khadi and handloom sectors by allocating Rs 19,000 crore and providing training to workers in these sectors, Union Minister for Textiles, Kavuri Sambasiva Rao said today.  
 
Focusing on manufacturing quality textile products should be what the workers do to make the National Textile Corporation Units successful and profitable, he said while inaugurating two spinning mills, set up at a cost of Rs 55 crore and Rs 66 crore respectively by NTC at Kalayarkoil and Kamuthakudi near here.
