Cotton price likely to see a declining trend

Pakistan cotton growers and ginners once again faced frenetic trading on the cotton market on Wednesday and looked a bit upset due to strong supply of seed cotton.

According to cotton analyst, the growers and ginners had hoarded phutti in expectations of increase in profit amid tight supply but now phutti arrivals improved significantly, this is factor, which is inducing them to sell huge stock below the expected level.

Indian textile and apparels exports in the first six months of the current financial year 2013-14 as per the latest data revealed by RBI earned nearly 15 billion dollars (around Rs 92,926 crores). Of the total 14.935 billion dollars exports, textile and garments contributed about Rs 92,358 crores during the first half of the current fiscal year, with readymade garments accounting for 7.074 billion dollars (Rs 43,745 crores) of the same.

Trading activity continued to remain slow on the cotton market on Saturday with both buyers and sellers making every efforts to turn the prices in their favour. Most buying deals offered by spinners were not obliged by ginners who are holding back their stocks in the hope of a price rise.

Brokers said that the rapidly rising prices of phutti (seed cotton) are instrumental in pushing cotton prices higher which forced ginners to ask for higher price for cotton.

Grasim Industries said the work at greenfield viscose staple fibre project has been hampered due to unexpected floods at Vilayat in Gujarat in the last week of September. This will affect the project commissioning schedule, it said.  
Further the company said the operations at chemical plant are also suspended due to floods affecting the plant and power supply. 'This, however, is not likely to have any significant impact on the company's profitability, considering the present contribution of this plant to overall profitability.

The Centre is taking steps to develop the sick khadi and handloom sectors by allocating Rs 19,000 crore and providing training to workers in these sectors, Union Minister for Textiles, Kavuri Sambasiva Rao said today.  
 
Focusing on manufacturing quality textile products should be what the workers do to make the National Textile Corporation Units successful and profitable, he said while inaugurating two spinning mills, set up at a cost of Rs 55 crore and Rs 66 crore respectively by NTC at Kalayarkoil and Kamuthakudi near here.
