Bihar earmarks 115 acres for apparel, textiles park near Patna

Bihar state has earmarked a land tract of 115 acres in Bihta on the outskirts of capital Patna to set up an apparel and textiles park. The proposed park forms part of the state policy to promote textiles, leather, information technology and food processing, this was recently announced by the state deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi.

Modi was speaking after the inauguration of a three-day fair organized by the Bihar Readymade Garments Association.

The textile sector is the largest employment generating sector of India, especially for low-skilled workers, and needs to be supported. The Textiles Ministry held preliminary discussions on the matter related to textile industry with officials in the Commerce Ministry and the Directorate General of Foreign Trade. They have forwarded all the complaints received from the industry. The Secretaries from the two ministries are also in touch.

Bangladesh textile industry faces a stiff competition from Pakistan, China, India and some other cotton producing countries. As an encourage to this sectors and to keep the home textile and specialised textile sectors afloat, the government has decided to provide various types of incentives, as export earnings from the two areas were on constant decline.

As Bangladesh is dependent on import of cotton, they see no other options but to provide incentives to keep the sectors competitive in the global market, said vice chairman of the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) Shubhashish Bose.
