Cotton output of Pakistan down by 33.5pc

According to the report issued by the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association on Monday, Seed cotton (Phutti) equivalent to 9.475 million tonnes or 9,475,729 bales have reached ginneries across Pakistan as of January 15, 2016 registering a shortfall of 33.5 per cent compared to 14.251m bales a year earlier.

This shortfall would inflict a loss of around $6 billion on GDP — of which $1.5bn would be suffered by cotton growers and $4.5bn by the industry and exporters, experts say.

The Cotton Crop Assessment Committee (CCAC) at the meeting held on Monday assessed cotton crop size for the season 2014-15 at 13.4885 million bales. They have agreed to maintain the cotton crop size for 2014-15 in Punjab at 9.902m bales, Sindh at 3.48m bales, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at 0.0015m bales and Balochistan at 0.1070m bales, respectively.

Cotton Commissioner Dr Khalid Abdullah informed the meeting about cotton crop condition and status of cotton arrival position in ginning factories. The major obstacles in achieving cotton production targest were climate and seed quality issues.

Cotton sowing reduced by half over last year in India

Widespread precipitation last weekend in US largest cotton growing region, Texas has raised prospect of a bountiful crop in the coming season. This has an adverse impact on cotton prices with the US cotton futures' benchmark contract falling on 16 June.

However, mill buying supported prices for the old cotton crop traded via the July contract on ICE Futures US which is due to expire on 9 July. The most-active December contract was bearish through the day, dealers reported.

Pakistan to set a target for cotton crop sowing for the next crop season as it sees an increase in the area under crop cultivation as the demand of cotton is estimated to increase by 28 percent with the getting of GSP Plus status. The Federal Cotton Committee (FCC) along with National Food Security and Research, Textile Industry Division, Planing Development and Reforms will meet on February 27 to fix the crop sowing targets for the next crop season and also take stock of the crop production during last year.
