Tanzania domestic textiles to outnumber cheap imports

Tanzania is making efforts to protect its domestic textile market. For that, efforts are being made to introduce them in local markets instead of cheap imports. More manufacturers were moving huge sales to the regional markets of the East, Central and Southern Africa than they did to the local markets.Also, instead of dealing with second-hand clothes, traders can start buying and selling locally manufactured garment and earn maximum returns.

The Zimbabwe Textile Manufacturers Association (ZITMA) demands complete ban on polyester knitted fabric and finished blankets entering the country. The moves comes to protect the local textile industry from collapsing as cheap imports, mainly from China are flooding the market. Industry players told the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Industry and Commerce that cheaper imports made local products uncompetitive.

At the time when Zimbabwean clothing sector is facing stiff competition from cheap imports that have flooded the market, making locally manufactured clothing uncompetitive. The government has granted a one-year rebate to the clothing and textile industry which will allow 52 manufacturers to import textile materials duty-free.

Rebate is an amount paid by way of reduction, return, or refund on what has already been paid or contributed.

The Zambian textile and clothing industry is being challenged by cheap imports and is losing large segments on the home market. Nonetheless, the textiles and clothing industry remains a sector of export interest to Zambia where the country could exploit its vast existing potential – if supply-side and international trade restrictions were resolved.

Government of Zambia will be coming up with an aggressive programme next year to assist the growth of textile industry in the country.
