Limited cotton arrivals keeps prices stable

Kapas or raw cotton prices ruled stable on Friday as demand from ginners was limited. Around 60,000-62,000 bales of cotton arrived in Gujarat state and 2 lakh bales of cotton across the country.

Traders and ginners said that arrivals are restricted since farmers are holding back their produce.

Gujarat Sankar-6 cotton traded at Rs. 42,900-43,000 for a candy of 356 kg. Kapas was quoted Rs. 1,050-1,085 for a maund of 20 kg and gin delivery kapas traded at Rs. 1,085-1,100 a maund in Rajkot.

Ethiopia exports both cotton fabric and garments made of cotton. Government in a move to boost textile and garment exports plans to use genetically modified (GM) seedlings. The Ethiopian farmers are preparing to plant genetically modified cotton seedlings when the rainy season gets underway in June.

In early 2013, the Ethiopian parliament had ratified a proclamation stating that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be imported if the environment ministry approves their compliance with bio-safety and public health guidelines.

Turkmenistan textile production has gained world fame. The country is known not only as a supplier of woolen carpets, as well as cotton and silk textiles of high quality. Turkmen Textile Industry Ministry on Jan.28 announced that Turkmenistan plan to commission two new cotton-spinning factories in the near future.

These facilities are being constructed by Norsel International Insaat Dis Ticaret Sanayi Limited which will commission them in February, 2014, according to the ministry.

U.S. strong cotton export sales hit trader’s expectation and stoked worries over tight supplies in the world's top exporter, resulting in ICE cotton rise for the third consecutive day on Thursday. U.S. exporters sold 479,700 running bales of upland cotton in the week ended Jan. 23, down slightly from the previous week's report, which had shown the strongest sales since October.

The sales data were "very, very surprising" and "supportive" of the market, said Louis Rose, co-founder of Risk Analytics.

Many traders expected spot prices at near five-month highs would curtail demand.
