USAID sponsored trip for Kyrgyz apparel factories in Apparel Sourcing Paris

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) as part of its effort to expand export markets for Kyrgyzstan’s garment industry sponsored the trip for the Kyrgyz apparel factories to participate for the first time in the Apparel Sourcing Paris exposition held last month (18-21 September.

The Kyrgyz apparel industry has a long history of textile and garment manufacturing which presently consists of more than 500 small and medium sized manufacturers located in or near Bishkek.

The India-Afghanistan Trade and Investment Show to take place this September in India. At this exhibition, Afghan investors who will attend a carpet exhibition in India will try to attract the attention of India’s private sector towards Afghan carpets and encourage Indian businessmen to invest in the carpet industry in Afghanistan will the help of the Indian government and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This will solve their problems in this industry, said Khanjan Alokozay, the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI) deputy head.

The United States Aid for International Development (USAID) launched the southern Africa trade hub programme to enhance economic growth and food security through trade. The programme has been running in Zambia, Lesotho, Swaziland, Namibia, South Africa, Botwana, Malawi and Mozambique from 2010 to September this year, according to the latest report on the USAID southern Africa trade hub.

The Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has signed a Letter of Collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) West African Trade Hub and African Partners Network, in Accra on Thursday. The collaboration will help establish a framework for cooperation between the two parties in the implementation of the AGOA Trade Resource Centre, stated Mr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry.

Botswana companies have failed to take full advantage of AGOA because of lack of raw materials and complications arising from US rules of origin despite of that according to the statistics from US Department of Commerce, Botswana exports to US under the African Growth Opportunity Act (AGOA) increased by 53 percent from $5.5 million (P52 million) to $8.5 million (P80 million) in the first 11 months (Jan-Nov) of the year, mainly on the back of increase in textile and apparel.

Building on the momentum of President Obama's Trade Africa initiative, memorandum of understanding to expand trade and investment linkages between the United States and sub-Saharan Africa in the cotton textile and apparel sectors have been entered into by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA), and the African Cotton and Textile Industries Federation (ACTIF).
