Rwanda government to boost Made in Rwanda campaign has announced tax exemption for importation of textile raw materials and leather, it applies to both import duties and Value Added Tax (VAT) which is effective from Friday, December 2, 2016. Although this move will see government lose billions of francs in taxes that it was getting from leather and textile imports, in the long run the government hopeful that it will boost the Made in Rwanda campaign.

Rwanda government to establish new clothing and shoe factories at the newly-demarcated Apparel Manufacturing Zone (AMZ) which currently occupies 5 hectares at the Kigali Special Economic Zone has signed agreements with two investors. The agreement was signed between the ministry and two investors Albert Supplies Ltd and Rwantan Ltd involved in the apparel manufacturing industry.

The Government land will be given to investors engaged in apparel production, requiring them to pay for it over a period of 20 years as a way of encouraging them to invest in the country.

The Ministry of Trade and Industry confirmed that there is a plan to waive the 25 percent Customs duty on imported fabric, a move that is meant to boost the production of locally-made garments. But this could spell doom for Rwanda's only textile factory, L'usine Textile du Rwanda (Utexrwa) struggling to stay in business due to competition from imported fabrics.
