The recycling partnership joined by Alpek Polyester

Alpek Polyester, an integrated business unit of Alpek, S.A.B. de C.V. and Charlotte, North Carolina-based DAK Americas LLC, has announced that it has joined The Recycling Partnership, Falls Church, Virginia, as an active member in support of the organization’s goals of increasing residential recycling rates and the need for increased availability of recycled materials to enable the creation of circular business models.

The company recently started operations at it’s new 1.5 million ton-per-year ethane cracker at the company’s integrated Baytown chemical and refining complex in Texas. ExxonMobil and SABIC have also created a new joint venture to advance development of the Gulf Coast Growth Ventures project, a 1.8 million tonne ethane cracker currently planned for construction in San Patricio County, Texas. The facility will also include a monoethylene glycol unit and two polyethylene units.

The final closing is planned for the end of the third quarter of this year. The Austrian Starlinger Group based in Vienna will take over the German business unit from Chemnitz also known under the brand name ‘Barmag Spinnzwirn’. Both parties have agreed to not disclose the purchase price. The purchase contract was signed accordingly by both companies this week.

The Chinese domestic market for polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) likely to continue seeing decline in prices into October, as scheduled plant start-ups of Ningxia Baofeng Energy’s plant will boost supply, with not much upturn in demand, according to industry sources on Wednesday.

China’s PE-PP capacity is due to increase by a total of 600,000 tonnes/year in October, with start-ups of Ningxia Baofeng Energy’s plants in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region. The new PE and PP plants have the same 300,000 tonne/year capacity.

Alpek SAB (ALPEKA), the petrochemicals arm of Mexican conglomerate Alfa, engages in the production of polyethylene and polypropylene. Its main products include PAT, PET, polypropylene, expandable polyethylene, and polyester fiber. The company has 20 facilities with an installed capacity of 5.8Mt/y in three countries: Argentina, the US and Mexico, its revenue dropped the most on record after missing earnings estimates on weaker-than-expected margins on polyester, its biggest product.
