MEG price gains in Asia

Asian MEG prices gained US$6 a ton CFR China and CFR South East Asia in the last week of April. Mono ethylene glycol prices tumbled opening the week in Asian markets only to recover later and post a weekly rise as markets stabilized. In China, inventories were slowly consumed supporting domestic prices to rise. Market fundamental improved somewhat that week, while favorable influences were limited.

In Europe, spot MEG prices moved sideways on the week amid limited material inquiries while demand remained soft.

MEG price hits a 6-month low in Asia

Asian MEG prices tumbled US$45 a ton CFR China and CFR South East Asia marker in the third week of April. Mono ethylene glycol spot hit a 6-month low on high stocks as prices tumbled amid ample supply in China and a rise in feedstock ethylene costs. Prices also plunged on talk of short-selling while in China, prices plummeted as inventory levels grew dramatically.

In US, spot MEG prices were firm and flat for a second consecutive week, as a balanced market continued to offset price movements. Barge activity continued to remain stagnant while China was at net back to low for US market.

MEG price declines in Asia

Asian MEG prices declined US$13 a ton CFR China and CFR South East Asia in the second week of April. Mono ethylene glycol prices were down in Asia amid weak market sentiment and shorter week.

In China, most of week saw MEG market in stalemate, mainly because market participants were cautious of mixed news in the market. On weekend, players in short position strengthened once again as the volume of goods arriving in China’s ports expanded significantly.

MEG price gains in Asia, falls in Europe

Asian MEG prices partially regained US$8 a ton CFR China and CFR South East in the first week of April. In China, offers for nearby-month cargoes surged up US$10 on the week.

Mono ethylene glycol prices in Asian markets partially regained previous week’s loss as downstream demand was seen improving. In China, domestic MEG prices also followed suit, inching up week on week as downstream demand from polyester factories helped bolster buying activity. Prices fluctuated upward early in the week and then fell somewhat at weekend.

MEG price drops across all regions

Asian MEG prices declined by US$15 a ton CFR China and CFR South East Asia in the last week of March. Mono ethylene glycol market in Asia sobered opening the week but was under recovery later together with a range-bound trend.

In China, MEG prices dropped at first and then rose somewhat that week. At the beginning of that week, domestic prices kept declining and in the second half of the week, markets rebounded slightly in line other Asian markets. Overall inventory with downstream was at a high level at present and some players bought a few volumes before the Tomb-sweeping Day.

MEG price dips amid poor demand

Asian MEG prices plummeted US$65 a ton CFR China and CFR South East Asia in the fourth week of March. Mono ethylene glycol prices plummeted on the week due to weak downstream demand, while domestic prices in China also followed suit. In China, domestic market was weak with prices under downward correction. Trading sentiment was moderate amid weak buying interest.

MEG price slips on weak downstream demand

Asian MEG prices declined US$23 a ton CFR China and CFR South East Asia in the second week of March. In China, prices went down from US$45 a ton during the week.

Mono ethylene glycol prices declined on the week on weak downstream demand as polyester producers skipped buying on ample supply. Meanwhile, traders were heard halting short-selling. Iran's Farsa Chimie plans to restart its 450,000 ton a year MEG plant in Assaluyeh by end March, after it remained shut since mid-February.

MEG prices plunge across all regions

Asian MEG prices declined US$52 a ton CFR China and CFR South East Asia in the first week of March. In China, prices moved down US$70 a ton early in the week, and remained range-later in the week.

Mono ethylene glycol prices dived in Asian markets on urgent sales with sellers lowering offers to avoid incurring port costs. In China, port inventories continued to swell while supply in domestic market was abundant that week. Feedstock ethylene also plunged easing cost support to MEG.

MEG price hits 21-month high in US, down in Asia

Asian MEG prices declined US$23 a ton CFR China and CFR South East Asia in the last week of February. Mono ethylene glycol prices tumbled further for the second consecutive week on lower demand and rising stock at Chinese ports.

Falling downstream PET prices also influence MEG markets. In China, MEG domestic market continued to decline notably with spot plunging on Monday to Thursday while weekend saw signs of rebounding.
