In order to increase the import of the premium Merino wool in India, the Australian textile major The Woolmark Company is planning an entry into the domestic handloom and weaving clusters of Gujarat and Manipur.

Arti Gudal, country manager, The Woolmark Company said that about 85 per cent of Indian wool is of carpet grade; 10 per cent is of coarse grade and only five per cent is of apparel grade. The textile and apparel industry imports a bulk of its wool from Australia.

Government in order to provide a level playing field to the knitwear industry will announcing a package for the country’s knitwear sector in the next two months. As the knitwear industry is facing tough competition from countries like China owing to factors like lower automation and lack of technology Upgradation.

Secretary in the textiles ministry Anant Kumar said that they met stakeholders on a package for the knitwear sector on June 5 and held consultations on the draft scheme.

The Indian knitwear industry to soon see their dream coming true as Zohra Chatterji, Secretary, Union textile ministry will be inaugurating the Knitwear Technology Mission Centre on 6th May in Tirupur.

The KTM, an Rs.13 crore project by Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) will focus on newer and greener technology in manufacture; enhance designing capability of knitwear sector aimed at higher value addition across the apparel value chain and also to bring round the year business.
