Pakistan cotton market witnessed plummet in lint price due to slow demand

The slow moving demand and falling lint prices in major world markets has lead to further drop in cotton prices on Monday in Pakistan cotton market. Moreover, the falling petroleum prices are attracting fibre consumers to go for polyester yarn and other man-made fibres which are also affecting cotton prices.

The cotton economy is presently in great distress because on the one hand, reduced lint prices are hurting growers and, on the other end, the textile industry is facing shortage of energy and gas.

Concerns over supply cotton trading surged at six week high of 23,600 bales after rains in Punjab on Tuesday. If rain continues, the price of cotton likely to go further up.

The rains have slowed down picking of phutti (seed-cotton) in Punjab. It has also caused increase in price of cotton by Rs50 per maund (37.324 kilograms) to Rs5,450 per maund in the afternoon on Wednesday.

According to Taqi Abbas, a broker at the Karachi Cotton Exchange, uncertainty convinced textile mill-owners to buy big lots of the commodity.

With higher arrivals of phutti (seed cotton) and increased selling by ginners, cotton prices witnessed drop on Thursday. At the beginning ginners indulged in panic-selling which further pushed down lint prices as millers and exporter showed very little buying interest.

Exporters are facing difficulties in meeting export parity due to falling prices world over. Cotton prices are currently under pressure with China reducing its buying which is the single largest importer of cotton and cotton yarn.

Higher arrivals of phutti (seed cotton) coupled with slow demand for cotton yarn kept spinners to the sidelines. While prices moved lower on the cotton market yesterday in Pakistan.

Lint prices are coming under more pressure with phutti arrivals gaining momentum with each passing day. On ready trading prices dropped by Rs150 to Rs200 per maund, brokers said.

Lint trading at main stations of Punjab and Sindh remained dreary due during three days past week to absence of workforce, non-availability of transport and power load shedding.
 
Spot rate was firm with no active physical trading on back of Eid holidays, traders said on Saturday.
 
During past week the buyers made deals for fine bales for immediate use besides purchased all grades in order to fortify their inventories, traders at Karachi Cotton Association (KCA) said.

Some hectic buying was witnessed on the cotton market from spinning mill owners ahead of Eidul Fitr holidays due to which there was some improvement seen in trading activity on Thursday.

Phutti arrivals could not improve as growers were reluctant to sell their produce at lower prices, but there were some weaker links among them trying to sell at prevailing low rates to meet their Eid-related expenses.
 
Deals were finalised at Rs5,850 and Rs6,000 in Punjab and Rs5,800 and Rs5,950 in Sindh.

Pakistan cotton market has been witnessing a continued downward trend in cotton prices throughout this week. Lint prices have been declining regularly and the cotton market is quite bearish. The ex-gin price as determined by the Karachi Cotton Association (KCA) lost Rs 300 per maund (37.32 Kgs) of grade III cotton.

Cotton prices raised as trading gained momentum over tight supply. The Karachi Cotton Association (KCA) raised its spot rate by Rs50 to Rs6,350. The following were Thursday’s new crop Karachi Cotton Association (KCA) official spot rates for local dealings in Pak rupees for base grade 3 staple length 1-1/32” micronair value between 3.8 to 4.9 NCL.

With buyers reluctant to enter into big deals trading at Pakistan cotton market continued at slow pace. Only around 2,500 bales from new crop have so far been sold by ginners which were mostly lifted by Punjab spinners. Around seven to eight ginning units have started operating in Sindh and five in Punjab. However, all these ginneries are getting raw cotton supplies from lower Sindh where crop normally matures earlier than other cotton-growing belts of the country.

Rumours that five per cent import duty will be imposed on cotton yarn in Pakistan set the cotton markets on fire on 27 March. The markets swayed on news that recommendation of duty imposition has been prepared and would be put up for approval in the next meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC).
