Indian Jute Mills Association (IJMA) met the state Labour Minister Malay Ghatak recently and apprised him of the latest problems Beside, requesting him to take some immediate steps, they have urged state government to introduce a Jute Policy along with jute packaging laws for different agro products in the state for sustainability of the jute sector. They also urged to issues order for packing 100 percent potato and rice in jute bags.

With Bangladesh lifting jute export ban its prices in domestic market likely stabilize as per Indian traders prefer jute import from Nepal and Bangladesh as production costs of jute in two countries lower than in India. Production costs in Bangladesh are cheaper than those in India by 30 per cent. While, Nepal is used as a conduit for third party illegal imports.

The jute industry is reeling under a demand crisis and four mills are now under a lock-out. Nearly one lakh persons are out of work in the industry due to production cutbacks. Moreover, the West Bengal government not buying jute bags as promised is a big menace for the jute industry.

The Indian Sugar Mills Association, All India Flat Tape Manufacturers Association and National Federation of Co-operative Sugar Factories had petitioned the Commission against the Indian Jute Mills Association (IJMA) and Gunny Trades Association (GTA), alleging rigging of jute bag prices on August 2 2011. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has indicted the jute industry for monopolizing and manipulating prices of jute bags unjustifiably.
