Union Minister calls for improvement in raw jute quality

To help the Indian jute industry to compete with neighbouring Bangladesh in diversified jute products, the Union minister Smriti Irani at an ICC event last evening has called for an improvement in raw jute quality.

For the purpose, the jute farmers will have to be given good seeds which would also raise productivity and their income level.

She said that this is a pressure on the jute industry and the issues are related to the quality of raw jute. The quality can be improved by using good quality seeds.

Irani also advocated the use of jute in building road infrastructure.

Assam state sees rise in jute cultivation area during the last five years and jute farmers are getting better remunerative prices for their crop. This year, over 70,000 hectares of land in the State was under jute cultivation against around 62,000 hectares in 2010-11, said Agriculture Minister Rakibul Hussain in the the legislative assembly.

He added that the Central Government is working to ensure that there is no artificial shortage of jute, including by hoarding, and the State Government is extending full cooperation in the matter.

Jute bags for food grain packaging will be reduced further next year

The Textile Ministry has decided no further dilution in the rules for compulsory use of such bags for packaging of foodgrain and sugar this year as it would have severe impact on lakhs of workers and jute farmers.

The Textiles Ministry decided to retain the recommendation of 90 percent minimum jute for food grain and 20 percent for sugar, as recommended by the standing advisory committee for the current season. The jute industry, which is struggling to cope with sharp fall in orders of jute bags, has got a breather.

Labour shortage leads to increase processing cost of jute in Bangladesh

A long process is required to get jute fibre for marketing and the jute farmers are now engaged in the process. Processing of jute is going on in full swing despite acute labour shortage in Nilphamari district in Northern Bangladesh.
 
The labour shortage has lead to increase in the remuneration of a labour to Tk 400 per day as a result processing cost also gone up.
