Japan imports 97 percent of textiles (worth $38 billion), of which China accounts for 67 percent, since the import of Chinese textile goods has become more expensive due to the high cost, Japan is focusing on nine of 19 laboratories, of which two are in Tamil Nadu, said K Phanindra Reddy, Principal Secretary, State Handlooms, Handicrafts, Textiles and Khadi Department.

Afghanistan is a fast emerging market of textiles and currently Indian exporters have negligible direct trade of textiles with Afghanistan which they sell to this market through third countries. Synthetic and Rayon Textile Export Promotion Council (SRTEPC), apex body of Indian textile industry and Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) have jointly signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a delegation from Afghanistan for boosting direct export of polyester fabrics and made-ups from India, especially from MMF hub in Surat to Afghanistan.

With Pakistan’s inclusion in the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) by the European Union (EU) India has lost 37 textile markets over the last two years in the European Union to Pakistan. Preferences are given to certain countries through tax exemption in developed markets to boost trade from that country.
