Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI) of the Department of Science and Technology has developed new technologies for promoting the use of natural fibers for clothing and fashion accessories for which Senator Loren Legarda congratulated them. Using natural fibers empowers indigenous peoples communities to put their traditional arts and crafts like the ikat, the t’nalak, abel iloko, the piña, and others in the mainstream textile industry.

The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST- PCIEERD) recently presented Science and Technology (S&T) Roadmap for textile industry aiming to reinvigorate the country’s once dominating sector at the DOST Executive Lounge in Taguig City.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is stepping up its efforts to boost the local fabrics industry with the launching of its Innovation Center for Yarns and Textiles (ICYT) in Bicutan, Taguig, costing around P54 million to produce yarns made of the country’s indigenous materials. It is a facility for producing natural fibers, research and development among other functions.

DOST to upgrade abaca fiber production to meet demand and boost farmers’ income

Abaca farming is one of the major livelihood activities in six barangays of Patnongon namely Gella 2, Aureliana, Villa Elio, Villa Salomon, Tigbalogo and Igburi. The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is keen on upgrading the abaca fiber production as more than 72 hectares of land are planted with abaca in the said areas and about 50 farmers are engaged in abaca processing.

DOST would like to upgrade abaca fiber production mainly to meet the increasing market demand of abaca fiber and at the same time boost the income of farmers.
