Pakistan textile, clothing products exports recorded over 7pc growth

Pakistan’s textile and clothing products due to the cash subsidy offered under the prime minister’s exports enhancement package recorded over 7 percent growth in exports during four months (July-October) of the current fiscal year.

Textile and clothing products exports worth $4.4 billion took place during July-October period of the year 2017-18 as against $4.1 billion of the corresponding period of the previous year, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

Pakistan’s textile and clothing exports witnessed decline during the July-May period of 2016-17, as per data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics on Tuesday. The decline in export proceeds was evident in rupee terms. Overall export proceeds in July-May were down 3.13pc to $18.540bn.

During the first 11 months of the current fiscal year textile and clothing exports decline 1.98 percent year-on-year to $11.24 mainly due to lower proceeds from raw material and low value-added products, such as cotton yarn and fabrics.

The Pakistani government is focusing on promotional activities to increase the volume of bilateral trade with Africa. According to the sources at the Commerce Division, the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) to enhance trade relations with African countries is planning to attend 15 international exhibitions during the current fiscal year.

Indian textile sector is at big disadvantage compared to Bangladesh and Vietnam as it does not have FTAs with U.S., Canada dn Europe. Least developed countries are exporting at zero duty while India’s exports are subject to 10 to 14 percent duty. Hence, the Textile Ministry has urged the government to expedite Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with the U.S. and European Union to help double exports, said its Secretary Rashmi Verma.

Pakistan’s textile industry which is the largest manufacturing industry in the country and contributes about 8 % to its GDP is becoming “unviable” in terms of export of yarn and fabric said the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) Chairman S.M.Tanveer.

The industry growth has become stagnant due to non-diversification since long. He further highlighted that the world dependence on Polyester is around 70% at present against merely 19% in Pakistan. This situation has made it difficult for local industry to find place in the world market.
