Cotton trials in Central Highlands to show potential results

Queensland Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry senior research scientist Paul Grundy says the Central Highlands has experienced a number of wetter seasons in the past field, resulting in bowl losses and lower quality harvests and yields. The study aims to rectify this. By using a biodegradable plastic film, growers may be able to plant in August rather than September encouraging the cotton to flower earlier.

Phutti (seed cotton) fortnightly arrivals have been witnessing falling trend in growth from 15.27pc recorded up to December to 13.75pc in middle of the month and to 9.36pc up to Jan 1, and now 7.16pc during the last fortnight.

Phutti arrivals registered a growth of 7.16 per cent in the fortnight (Jan 1 to 15), declining from 15pc at the start of this season (2013-14), indicating that the crop size would not be much bigger than that of last year.

The prices of lint and raw cotton plunged due to demand for cotton dropping on Friday as arrivals improved. The price of Gujarat Sankar-6 cotton decreased by Rs 200 to Rs 42,800-43,000 for a candy of 356 kg. Though sellers demanded Rs 43,500 a candy, buyers were not ready to purchase at this price. Kapas, or raw cotton, declined Rs 10 to Rs 1,080-1,125 for a maund of 20 kg in Rajkot.

US cotton production is raised 118,000 bales from last month, due mainly to an increase for Texas with domestic mill use remaining unchanged. But exports are raised to 10.5 million, leaving ending stocks unchanged at 3.0 million bales. To reflect higher production, the U.S. cotton estimates for 2013/14 are revised slightly.

The marketing-year average price is projected in a narrower range of 72-77 cents per pound, with the midpoint of 74.5 cents raised marginally from last month.

Export incentives for cotton and its yarn has been done away

The Finance Ministry has done away with certain export promotion incentives on cotton, cotton yarn exports. The apparent surge in export value of these products in recent years has prompted the Government to remove these export promotion incentives for these products, official sources said.

Cotton yarn exports will also not be eligible for benefits of incremental export incentive scheme.

Constant demand for cotton leading to rising trend in prices

The constant demand from leading spinners for quality cotton has maintained rising trend in lint prices. However, on the other hand slow arrivals of phutti (seed cotton) have kept trade volume from gaining momentum.

Consequently, there is constant rise in phutti prices which resulted in higher lint prices. The Punjab variety cotton is mostly being quoted between Rs6,800 to Rs7,300 per maund and phutti prices in the range of Rs3,000 to Rs4,000 per 40 kg.

Many spinners who were keen to replenish their stocks with quality lint readily paid up deals even at higher prices which help generate trading activity.

Cotton rises sharply, with China reducing its planting acreage

China, the world’s largest producer of the fiber decision to reduce planting acreage by nearly 9% in 2014 as resulted in sharp rise of cotton futures in early trade Tuesday.

Cotton for March delivery rose 1 cent, or 1.2%, to 84.67 cents a pound. Futures had risen as much as 1.7% in overnight trading.

The China Cotton Association said that plantings would decline to an estimated 4.2 million hectares for the third year in a row. Sharon Johnson, a senior cotton specialist at KCG Futures in Atlanta, said that the resulting yields from China could reach their lowest level since 2005.
