India’s cotton production likely to hit seven-year low in 2016-17

India's cotton production in 2015-16 has declined to 338 lakh bales (one bale of 170 kg each), down 12.4 percent from 386 lakh bales in the previous year, to hit a six-year low, according to last month's update of Cotton Advisory Board (CAB).

Sluggish demand pushes cotton prices down in India

Cotton markets in India continued to reel under demand pressure. Weak demand from mills remained sluggish pushing cotton prices down by about 3% or INR1,000 per candy of 355 kg over the week. According to reports, prices also declined due to poor export demand. Cotton exports in December were good but reversed in January, giving back the fibre to domestic mills. Traders believe that prices will decline further by another INR500 a candy in coming weeks.

USDA lowers global cotton output, pegs year-end stock higher in 2014/15

The latest report "World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates" of USDA has pegged global output down from its previous month's estimates. In the same vein, it has upped the year-end stock, implying lower consumption volume in 2014/15. Production is reduced for the US and Greece, with smaller revisions in several other countries.
