ASF price remains firm despite rising raw material cost

Acrylic staple fiber prices in Asian markets generally rolled over in the third week of January. In India, prices were revised down in the first week of January since acrylonitrile cost had subdued in December. Offers were revised down INR6 a kg (down US cents 9) on the week.

In China, medium-length fiber and cotton-type staple prices rolled over in the first week of January, however, were up US cents 2 a kg due to weak US$.

In China, ASF prices rolled over in the last week of November. Acrylic staple fibre prices generally rolled over as market transaction remained stable. Currently, inventory level was low and supply in China may tighten somewhat given the maintenance plan of Shanghai Petrochemical next week. Downstream demand was still sound, so ASF market was still active.

Although run rate was seen at a high level, market fundamentals were still balanced with the help of favorable demand. Upstream ACN values were slightly firm.

ASF price rolls over despite weak raw material cost

In China, ASF prices rolled over but went down US$1 a kg due to weak currency in the fourth week of November. Acrylic staple fibre prices were generally stable during the week, despite some hikes in settlement prices.

Upstream acrylonitrile cost weakened, leading to relieved cost pressure. In China, ASF producers enjoyed better profit margins, amid sound liquidity. Downstream demand was sound, so ASF market was still active. Demand is expected to keep steady next week.

In Pakistan, ASF prices remained unchanged as market fundamentals were still balanced.

In China, ASF prices were stable in Yuan terms but down US$2 a kg due to weak currency in the second week of November. Sinopec raised its November list prices to neutralize currency change, with cotton‐type staple 1.5D at US$1.88-1.89 a kg from Shanghai Petrochemical, US$1.84 a kg from Anqing Petrochemical and US$1.80 a kg from Qilu Petrochemical.

In China, production run rate picked up somewhat, leading to more supplies, while end demand remained modest. Export market transaction was impacted somewhat by higher prompt exchange rate.
