After the successful two edition of BSTIM, the Catalan textiles and clothing trade fair, the organizers has decided that the trade fair will now be held every two years to suit sector demands. The third edition of BSTIM will take place this February 2017 in Igualada, Spain’s knitted textiles capital. The main purpose of the trade fair is to promote “textile manufacturing of proximity” or homegrown manufacturing and strengthen the local industry.

Textile industry seek for a uniform duty of 5pc under GST

The government has already announced special packages for different segments of the textile industry in June last year and for made ups (an article manufactured and/or stitched from any type of cloth, other than a garment) in December. But now the focus is on GST which is a new tax regime and it will definitely impact the Indian textile industry.

The industry was expecting a special package for powerloom sector to be announced shortly but they do not expect any major announcement in the budget, a spokesperson for the industry said.

PTA price gains on tight supply in Asia

Asian PTA prices gained US$12 a ton CFR China and CFR Southeast Asia in the first week of January. In China, offers for bonded PTA goods on one-day trip followed up US$10 a ton on the week.

Purified terephthalic acid prices rose in Asian markets as supply was tightening and demand from India had picked up again ahead of maintenance shutdown later this year and also in the recovery period following the demonetization crisis since November.

Minister of State for Textiles Ajay Tamta has assured of all support will be extended to Assam state to develop its sericulture sector to make it a dominant rural industry, emphasizing the socio-economic importance of sericulture in sustaining the livelihood of rural population. Sericulture is an age-old tradition of Assam.

The Minister revealed that more than Rs 200 crore has been released for the State and that additional aid will be provided for developing infrastructure. Also, there is a need to explore the immense potential of the State in sericulture.

Cotton yarn manufacturers to slowdown investment in new capacity addition in the next five years due to sharp decline in exports to China, as local fabric makers slow down purchases.

Between FY12 and FY16, the sector added 7.3 million tonnes of manufacturing capacity. By the end of FY16, the manufacturing capacity in the country was 50 million spindles. The rapid growth, however, led to overcapacity, with fresh investment drying up.

Government has relaxed ban on importation of second hand clothes, to allow for revival and reorganization of the textile and clothing industry before the policy can be force. Also at present, there is little alternative to second hand clothes as the local textile industry is struggling to produce.

According to Industry Minister Mike Bimha, the policy on banning second hands clothes is there, but cannot be enforced at present.

Cotton prices soar to new high level

On sustained demand for quality cotton from spinners and some exporters due to which cotton prices soared to a new high level on Wednesday. However, no much expansion see in the trading volume as ginners were reluctant to dispose of their stocks.

Buyers were not ready to cross a certain price limit, whereas sellers were eager to get best price due to wide gap between demand and supply.
The wide gap between consumption and production keeps spinners extremely worried about source of future supply of cotton to keep the industry wheels moving, brokers said.

ASF price moves down in India

In India, prices were revised down in the first week of January since acrylonitrile cost had subdued in December. Offers were revised down INR6 a kg (down US cents 9) on the week.

In China, medium-length fiber and cotton-type staple prices rolled over in the first week of January, however, were up US cents 2 a kg due to weak US$.

Acrylonitrile price rises on strong demand

Asian ACN prices were up US$20 a ton CFR Far East Asia in the first week of January while Southeast Asia gained similarly on the week. In China, offers for offshore cargoes were up US$20 a ton during the week.

Acrylonitrile prices in Asian markets rose on stronger demand and tighter supply while CFR South Asia surged 15% although propylene costs rose marginally but down on the week. Downstream demand was stable as acrylic fiber suppliers ran at 96% capacity after sharp price increase. ABS sentiment were weak amid lukewarm trades, Acrylamide prices rose as suppliers ran at 60% capacity.
