Branded apparel may get costlier with the implementation of GST

With the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST) that is expected by April 2017. According to industry and experts, tax incidence on branded apparels and other finished textile products could rise at least three-four percent, assuming textiles come under the merit list of GST with this branded apparel may get costlier.

With Gurgaon starting to lose its sheen as the choice export and textile hub among investors due to the backdrop of a 45percent hike in the minimum wages last year and the increasing real estate costs. To boost textile industry in the state, textile minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar announced on Tuesday that a textile park will be set up in Haryana.

The textile park will involve investment to the tune of Rs181 crore of which the Centre will provide a subsidy of Rs 40 crore for the textile park.

The textile and clothing industry in Tunisia plays a critical role in the socio-economic development of the country as it accounts for more than 40% of industrial employment. A project to support the competitiveness of the value chain of the textile and clothing sector "HOW TEXHA" was recently launched in Tunis.

With funding of 3.2 million dinars granted by Switzerland, under the first phase, this project, is the result of a tripartite collaboration (Tunisia-Switzerland-International Trade Center).
