Gujarat textile processors demand for uniform GST for MMF yarn, fabric

The South Gujarat Textile Processors Association (SGTPA) leader recently met the sectoral co-convener of goods and services tax (GST) council Yogendra Garg on Wednesday demanding the council to seriously consider providing a level-playing field for the man-made fabric (MMF) sector compared to cotton sector. GST on MMF yarn is 18 percent whereas on fabric is 5 percent while for cotton yarn and fabric both, the GST rate is uniform at 5 percent.

Surat's textile sector is now weaving yet another success story where around 20 textile dyeing and printing mills from the traditional hub of man-made fabric (MMF) hub have turned to processing high-end mercerized cotton fabrics, that are in high demand in southern and northern parts of the country and have a strong export potential.

SGCCI, SGTPA join hands to develop textile processing and weaving cluster

Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) and South Gujarat Textile Processors' Association (SGTPA) have joined hands to develop a state-of-the-art textile processing and powerloom weaving cluster at Pinjrat village in Olpaad taluka, some 25 kilometre away from the Diamond city in the coming years.

SGCCI has written to Gujarat government seeking allotment of 50 lakh square metre of coastal land at Pinjrat village for setting up the cluster.

The Gujarat government had imposed 5% VAT on narrow fabrics during the State Budget in February-2015 which is manufactured mainly in two big centres, Surat man-made fabric (MMF) hub and Ahmedabad. In Surat alone, there are aound 300 small and bigh manufacturers of narrow fabrics. Following representation made by the industry association on Monday, the Gujarat government likely to abolish the 5% value-added tax (VAT) on narrow fabrics manufactured in Gujarat.

MMF traders and processors dissent to hike in job charge

MMF traders and processors highly disturbed with the hike in job charges recently announced by South Gujarat Textile Traders Association (SGTPA). They have strongly opposed to accept any further hike in prices or taxes stating that it is difficult for them to pass on the burden to the buyers when the man made fabric (MMF) demand has already been hit by inflation followed by late monsoon.
 

Textile processing units in Surat disturbed over water shortage

Around 125 textile processing units in Pandesara GIDC area in Surat are focused to run day shift only and shut down their units during night due to water shortage problem faced by the units. With only one shift running, the textile industry will now face a loss of crores of rupees, according to the Southern Gujarat Textile Processing Association (SGTPA).
 
The BJP municipal corporator of Varachha, Bhimji Patel has recently identified that there is an illegal water supply network run by mafias in Pandesara area in Surat.
