Pakistan to build first ever naphtha cracker

Pakistan is planning to build the country’s first state-of-the-art grand petrochemical complex which would include a Naphtha Cracker Complex (NCC), which will convert naphtha into various by products like ethylene and propylene, which are raw material feedstock to produce textiles and various other consumer products.

The announcement for setting up the naphtha cracker came up after a meeting of a delegation from Pakistan Chemical Manufacturing Association (PCMA) and federal minister for planning, development and reforms.

Indorama Ventures to revamp the abandoned ethane cracker site in Carlyss, Louisiana, which has sat idle on a 250-acre site since 2001 took a critical step towards breaking ground at the dormant Occidental Chemical Corp and proceed construction investing $175 million after receiving the air and water permits required.

Officials with Indorama Ventures said that issuance of a water permit in June and air permit in August keeps it on track for a scheduled fourth quarter 2017 startup.

Williams’ ethylene plant at Geismar to start commercial production in January

Williams Partners L.P. has announced commissioning efforts at Geismar plant is near completion and now expects ethylene production for sale to begin in January.

The commissioning effort has been especially challenging after the uncharacteristically hard shutdown at the time of the incident and as a result of being out of commission for more than a year, said John Dearborn, Senior Vice President of NGL & Petchem Services.

European olefins buyers look ahead to plunge in contract prices of ethylene to propylene

European olefin buyers are aiming for a plunge in contract prices of both ethylene and propylene following the direction of feedstock naphtha. As it was seen on December 20, when January ethylene and propylene contract prices were settled, naphtha was priced at $962.25/mt CIF NWE. It has since fallen, to be assessed at $917/mt CIF NWE Monday.

However, the buyers are more optimistic about fall in ethylene contract prices than propylene for February.

A group led by Taiwan's USI Corp. is planning to build naphtha crackers at a petrochemical complex partly owned by China Petrochemical Corp. in the Gulei Petrochemical Zone in Zhangzhou city, located in China's eastern Fujian province for which Taiwan's government on Monday gave its approval

The naphtha crackers at a petrochemical complex in China will be build with an investment of US$263.6 million. The crackers are expected to produce ethylene and propylene. This is the first approval since lifting a ban on investments in China's downstream petrochemical industry in early October.
