In the week ended 17 July, the Asian ethylene markets continued to be hit by weak demand amid ample supply while prices touched a four-month low. The spread between North East and South East was at its widest in 11 months as the two markets saw diverge trend. Asian markers CFR NE was down US$20 a ton while SEA CFR fell US$35 a ton on the week. The ethylene-naphtha spread was wide at US$65 a ton.

Asian ethylene prices stayed flat amid weak PE market and turnarounds. Polyethylene prices were seen softening on a combination of weaker LLDPE futures, tapering agricultural demand and falling domestic prices in China. In Europe, ethylene spot also remained flat as market awaited production restarts. In US, ethylene spot slipped after restarts of two US Gulf Coast producers’ plants while Evangeline in-service date was expected by 15 June.

As bearish sentiments continue to cast dark covering over the entire chemical fiber industry, prices of most varieties are hitting 11-year low. Producers are caught in great losses and the downtrend is predicted to extend for some more time. For immediate relief, manufacturers may successively start cutting production or plan turnarounds forcing supply tightness to support prices.
