PHMA seeks detail procedure for applying DDT

The Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers Association (PHMA) seeking detailed procedure for applying drawback of duty and taxes (DDT) claims under the revised PM’s export package, as the process of application for DDT has not yet been formulated.

ECC had approved the revised package for exporters in early October and the textile ministry had notified this immediately. But even after a lapse of almost one and half month, no detailed circular was issued by the central bank regarding procedure of drawbacks, PHMA Chairman Khurram Anwar Khawaja said.

Chinese textile firms showing keen interest to establish joint ventures with Pakistani companies, as China’s labour intensive industries were becoming uncompetitive due to high production cost, which is why they were shifting manufacturing to other locations and focusing on research, according Ahsan Iqbal, federal minister for planning, development and reform.

The minister at a meeting with the members of the textile value-added sector, said that if they are able to have joint ventures with them, it will benefit the businessmen of both the countries.

About 1200 organized units in Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad and Sialkot were operating the country and the number has been same for the last 15 years ago. While, the export of knitted garments had shown an ever growing trend over the past many years but inconsistent government policies by successive governments not only increased the cost of doing business but also handicapped the country’s knitwear sector to exploit its real export potential.
