Cotton prices reached seasonal high mark

Cotton driven by strong buying interest from spinners mainly because of lower-than-expected cotton crop size, cotton prices gained to mark a seasonal high record on Monday

On the trading side as many ginners were still reluctant to clear their stocks even at rising cotton prices, the trading activity was slow.
Floor brokers said that with very little cotton in the fields, only stocks held by growers are finding their way into ginneries.

Besides, unsold cotton stocks held by ginners were also being offered for sale to spinners, they added.

Cotton ginneries in Pakistan got around 12.88 mn bales by mid Jan

Pakistan Cotton Ginneries managed to get around 1,28,82,963 cotton bales by January 15th, 2014, an increase of 7.16 percent against the last year figure of 1,20,22,040 bales, as per the fortnightly report on cotton arrivals by Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA)

The PCGA chairman Mukhtar Ahmed Khan Baloch said that 1,10,16,89 11.016 cotton bales were sold to the textile units, while exporters were sold 3,38,538 bales. Thus, overall 11.354 million bales were traded so far.

Pakistan capable of doubling cotton production

Pakistan has enormous potential for increasing its cotton production, according to Dr Zafar Hayat, senior member, Farmers Associates of Pakistan. Pakistan economy is losing billions of dollars every year due to sluggish production of cotton despite having potential.

He said that there is vast scope for increasing per acre yield of cotton in the country. Experiences of progressive farming have proved that the cotton production in Pakistan can easily be doubled if the impediments in its way are removed.

Phutti (seed cotton) witnessing falling trend in growth

Phutti (seed cotton) fortnightly arrivals have been witnessing falling trend in growth from 15.27pc recorded up to December to 13.75pc in middle of the month and to 9.36pc up to Jan 1, and now 7.16pc during the last fortnight.

Phutti arrivals registered a growth of 7.16 per cent in the fortnight (Jan 1 to 15), declining from 15pc at the start of this season (2013-14), indicating that the crop size would not be much bigger than that of last year.
