ASEAN textile exhibit to take place on Nov 7

The Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI), with support from the ASEAN Foundation, will hold a textile exhibit where the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) regional textiles will be featured.

Emphasis is laid on handwoven fabrics, natural dyes, and naturally dyed products that are being used by people all over the Southeast Asian region, exhibiting each country’s rich heritage, character, and culture.

Chennimalai popularly known as the 'Handloom Town' located in Erode district, Tamil Nadu though still recognized for its bedsheets and Jamakkalams, in the last five decades or so lost its distinct identity of handwoven textile heritage to powerloom. The number of handloom weavers in Chennimalai has shrunk from over a lakh in the 60s and 70s to less than 3,000 at present.

While nothing much seems to have been done to undo it for long, some attempt is now being made to revive, protect and preserve the heritage skills of the handloom weavers in that belt.

The Tamil Nadu Weavers Cooperative Society’s some weaver artisans have decided to create a few designs using organic cotton and natural dyes. This idea came in after interaction with weavers artisans from other states. This will be a huge step for them as they would have to give up elaborate designs and instead settle for simple, plain prints on the saris they weave.
