Textiles needs to be added to China tariffs list, feels National Council of Textile Organizations

NCTO president and CEO Auggie Tantillo quoted that, “NCTO is pleased that some textile products are on the second list. It would have a greater deterring effect, however, if more textile and apparel end products were included. As such, NCTO looks forward to working closely with the Trump administration to refine it.”

He represented a group of textiles-related organizations last month certfying in favor of adding textiles to the original tariffs lineup. The new list of products being eyed for tariffs must also pass through a public comment period.

U.S. textile and fiber makers see their business finally turning around with shipments of textiles and apparel increasing to $74.4 billion last year, an 11% increase since 2009, when the industry hit bottom during the economic slowdown and also losing market share to imports, according to National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO).

Cecilia Malmstrom, trade commissioner of the European Commission, the executive body of the EU, in a speech at the Atlantic Council here said that the next round of negotiations of Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership trade deal (TTIP) with the U.S. will begin the week of July 11 in Brussels despite the turmoil surrounding the U.K.’s vote to leave the European Union.

The National Council of Textile Organizations decision to give its vote in support of TPP came after an exhaustive analysis determined that NCTO’s principal objectives were met as part of the finalized terms of the agreement.

These objectives include a strong yarn forward rule of origin for the vast majority of textile and apparel products, reasonable, multi-year tariff phase-outs for sensitive textile and apparel products and lastly terms that provided for the stability of the Western Hemisphere textile and apparel production chain.
