Handloom weavers strive due to inadequate wages and lack of funds

Bangladesh handloom industry, a major source of earning for many rural people, is facing tough time. The handloom weavers are struggling for survival and are now forced to shift to other profession due to low wage coupled with lack of capital from the government.

According to the BHB (Bangladesh Handloom Board) data, about 0.129 million handlooms were closed down (made inactive) over the last three decades due to fund crisis, throwing over 0.10 million weavers out of employment.

Telangana has some of the famous handloom centres in the country, but the weavers there are facing hardship. Keeping this in mind the Telangana Government will soon coming out with a separate policy for handloom weavers in centres like Gadwal and Pochampalli and other areas of the State.

Handloom weaving, the centuries-old art is dying a slow death because weavers are unable to make ends meet. The number of India's handloom weavers is on the decline as low remuneration and rising costs are making traditional worker look to other trades. The government has finally woken up to their problems.

Textiles Ministry is working on a proposal to include handloom weavers under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) so that they can be entitled to higher wages.
