Surti sari to get costlier if higher GST

Indian man-made fabric (MMF) manufactured in Surat, it is estimated that around 40 percent of the production of saris and dress material is done targeting mainly the poor and lower middle class consumers and major part of the production of saris and dress material is supplied throughout the country.

If the central government implements 12 percent GST on fabrics made of MMF and 18 percent on branded textiles, the cheapest sari sold at Rs 200 will become costlier by Rs 95 for the end consumers.

FOSTTA opposes 2% excise duty on saris, dress materials

The Central Excise and Customs department has issued fresh circular that the saris, salwar suit and dress materials sold under the brand name and having retail prices above Rs 1,000 will come under the 2% excise duty tax net which is strongly opposed by the Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association (FOSTTA).

The district administration of Tamil Nadu to support the livelihood of the handloom weaver has urged power loom owners to abstain from producing notified items in the reserved list or face action.

Collector V. Dakshinamoorthy said that the Central Government had enforced the Handlooms (Reservation of Articles for Production) Act, 1985 and reserved 11 textile articles that must only be produced in handlooms.

Hike in job charges to make Surti saris costlier

Surat, country's biggest man-made fabric (MMF) where finished fabric including saris and dress material manufactured are set to become with the hike in job charges by textile processors. According to Textile traders, Surti saris and dress material will become costlier by Rs 1.5 to Rs 2 per metre. The prices of high-end saris, including those exported to different countries, are likely to go up by Rs 6 per metre.
