Cotton output estimated at 395 lakh bales in the ongoing season

Cotton crop is estimated at 395 lakh bales (170 kg each) in the ongoing season 2013-14 (started October 2013) mainly due to rise in yield against 388 bales estimated in June. as per the Cotton Association of India.
 
The arrivals up to June 30 were placed at 382.30 lakh bales and continue well into the off season. Arrivals in Gujarat that is India’s top cotton producer were the highest at 120 lakh bales, followed by Maharashtra at 84 lakh bales.

The Cotton Association of India (CAI) had marked the cotton production at 376 lakh bales of 170 kg each in its December estimate for the current marketing year. But having noticed that the acreage of cotton has come down to about 118 lakh hectares in the current season as compared to 120 lakh hectares last season, the Cotton industry body CAI has lowered marginally its production forecast of the commodity to 374 lakh bales for the current marketing year.

Cotton output in China which is due to start in a few months is predicted to decline 8 per cent on last season’s crop. The total production in the country is predicted to decline further still in 2014-15, to 3.9 million ha.

However, the Communist-ruled Asian nation will still dominate the global market at a total of 4.6 million ha, according to the International Cotton Advisory Committee.

World stocks are projected to reach 20 million tons at the end of the current northern hemisphere season, of which 56 per cent will be held in China.

Pakistan cotton output to surpass 13 million bales

The Cotton Crop Assessment Committee (CCAC) after several revisions had finally set a target of 12.36 million bales for 2013-2014. However, the current production statistics depict that cotton output will be higher than last year's. The country's cotton output is likely to surpass 13 million bales mark against last year's production of 12.9 million bales. The final production report will be issued by Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) in mid March.
