Acrylonitrile prices plunge amid falling propylene prices

Asian acrylonitrile markers plunged US$50 and US$38 a ton CFR Far East Asia and Southeast Asia respectively in the last week of September.

In China, spots offers fell US$50 a ton.

Acrylonitrile prices in Asian markets tanked reflecting the plunge in feedstock propylene cost in the third week. Ample supply in China also pulled down prices amid weak demand.

Downstream, styrene monomer was assessed down over the same period while ABS prices are expected to soften in October due to weak demand and raw material prices.

Acrylonitrile prices sinks as demand weakens

In the fourth week of September, Asian acrylonitrile markers slumped US$46 a ton both CFR Far East Asia and Southeast Asia. In China, spots offers rolled over.

Asian acrylonitrile prices continued to march lower amid persistently weak demand. Traders followed prevailing price level while buyers bought hand to mouth.

Downstream demand was lukewarm as run rate at ASF makers was close to 100 per cent while ABS market held stable in spite of lower prices in a few cases.
Acrylamide producers reduced operating rates on poor end user demand and thin trades.

Acrylonitrile price dives as demand weakens

In the third week of September, Asian acrylonitrile markers fell US$15-25 a ton both CFR Far East Asia and Southeast Asia. In China, spots offers were down US$100 a ton.

Acrylonitrile prices in Asian markets were under falling cost pressure amid weak demand. Upstream propylene prices continued to soften, with further drops expected. While there were few cargoes arriving ports, markets were well supplied.

Run rate at ASF units was close to 100 per cent while ABS prices inched down. Acrylamide producers ran at reduced rates on poor end user demand and thin trades.

Acrylonitrile prices to remain under pressure on weak demand

Acrylonitrile prices in Asian markets plunged further in the last week of August amid poor demand and falling upstream feedstock cost. Propylene prices were down US$66 on the week. Supplies in China increased with Shanghai Secco restarting one of its ACN lines. Downstream demand remained weak as run rate at ASF producers was modest while ABS market remained insipid. Acrylamide producers also ran with reduced operating rates on poor demand.

Asian acrylonitrile marker fell US$50 a ton both CFR Far East Asia and Southeast Asia. In China, spot offers were down US$40 on the week.

In the week ending 29 August, acrylonitrile prices were seen hitting more than two-year high in Asian and European markets amid continued tightening of regional and global supply. Prices have been on the rise for the last 16 weeks on active demand in a short supplied market.

Acrylonitrile prices rose in Asian markets in the week ended 24 January, tracking higher production costs and tightening supplies. However, trades were scarce amid cautious buying sentiment in the week. In Europe, spot prices for acrylonitrile rose to a nine-month high on tighter supply fundamentals. Meanwhile in US domestic acrylonitrile prices also jumped to a nine-month high on higher feedstock propylene cost. Asian acrylonitrile markers surged US$30-40 with CFR Far East Asia to be assessed at US$1,979-1,981 a ton while CFR South East Asia moved up to US$1,960.
