What is the history and origin of aramid fiber?
The aramid fibers were first introduced for commercial applications in the early 1960s when an American company DuPont introduced the first commercial meta-aramid fiber under the trade name Nomex. This Nomex fiber gained its popularity because its handle was similar to normal textile and apparel fibers but it was characterized by its good thermal and electrical insulations properties. After its introduction it was widely used in manufacturing of protective apparel, air filtration, thermal and electrical insulation, as well as a substitute for asbestos.
After a long research process, DuPont developed its first para-aramid fiber, called Kevlar in 1973. Kevlar is known to be one of the best-known para-aramids and/or aramids. After the introduction of kevlar, in 1978, a similar fiber was introduced with similar chemical structure by Akzo, and called it Twaron. Due to a production process patent dispute, Twaron came under the ownership of the Teijin Aramid Company. After this in 2011, Yantai Tayho of China introduced another similar aramid fiber called Taparan.
Other aramid fibers produced in the Netherlands and Japan called Teijinconex by Teijin Aramid; by Toray in Korea under the trade name Arawin; in China under the trade name New Star by Yantai Tayho and X-Fiper by SRO Group; and by Kermel in France under the trade name Kermel.
