Why recycled nylon?

Nylon is a synthetic fiber that is made of caprolactam polymer and is derived from petrochemicals. Being a tough fiber, it does not decompose or break easily and eventually disposed of in landfill and sea. Recycled nylon is a solution that utilises this waste into a useful product. Thus, one can easily create a new product without utilising fossil fuel further.

Recycle nylon is made from pre-consumer and post-consumer nylon waste sourced from weaving mills, landfill, sea and other potential sources. The post-consumer waste includes plastic bottles, fishing nets, scrap clothes or discarded carpeting that a consumer bought with a purpose, utilised it and then thrown away in the landfill while the pre-consumer waste includes rejected industrial material, plastic components and oligomers.

Recycled nylon is a suitable alternative to conventional nylon since it helps to save natural resources in terms of raw material, water, electricity while also contributing to building a sustainable environment. Moreover, recycled nylon reduces greenhouse gas emissions and helps to promote the initiative of shifting towards more recycling segments. Aquafil also claims that for every 10,000 tonnes of Econyl raw material, 70,000 barrels of crude oil is conserved and 65,100 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions is avoided. And global warming is reduced by about 90% as compared to other petroleum-based material.

Certainly, Econyl is an innovative material that serves an amazing purpose of cleaning the waste that we humans have generated over the past years that is piling up in the ocean and landfill but the material can only make a significant mark when the production of Econyl exceeds the conventional nylon.
