What is the chemical composition of bamboo fiber?

These fibers are cellulosic in nature and are derived from the pulp of a plant which is extracted from the plant’s stem and leaf. The chemical composition of bamboo resembles wood. The culm of bamboo plant contains 60 % parenchyma, 40 % fibers, and 10 % conducting tissues.

The composition of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin in the bamboo plant is in a ratio of 2:1:1. Lignin is hydrophobic (water-repelling) but has a great role in fiber formation. Thus, the structure of bamboo is so that the surface is hydrophilic and the lignin core is hydrophobic.
